It’s been very busy in the Athletics world as the winter sports have concluded and the spring sports have begun.  Here is the latest in CV Athletics news:

CIF State Wrestling Tournament

Congrats to CV wrestler, Brianna Espinoza for placing 6th in the State at the CIF tournament in Bakersfield!  Also, congrats to our 2 other wrestlers that qualified for State, but did not place: Giana Breshears and Alicia Espinoza.

Softball

Varsity: Central Valley 9, Ceres High 8

JV: Ceres defeats Central Valley

The Lady Hawks kicked off their season in style with a thrilling, come from behind victory over Ceres High last Friday.  The Hawks came into this contest without a win over Ceres in school history; dating back to the inaugural 2005-2006 season.  CV would have to fight to turn the tables in this rivalry as they trailed by the score of 8-5 heading into the bottom of the 7th.  The Hawks would mount a successful rally and plate 4 runs en route to the walk-off 9-8 win!  The CV stars of the day were: Valerie Espinoza 2-4, Reylena Herrera 3-4, 3 RBI, 2B, Gabriela Delatorre 2-4, 2 RBI, and Priscilla Hamidat 2-4, RBI.  The Hawks will look to keep things going today when they host the Hilmar Yellowjackets at 3:30pm.

Boys Volleyball

Varsity: Central Valley 3, Ceres 0

Varsity: Central Valley 2, Delhi 0

Varsity: El Capitan 2, Central Valley 0

Varsity: Central Valley 2, Pitman 0

Varsity: Livingston 2, Central Valley 1

Varsity (Foundation Game): Central Valley 3, Livingston 0

The Varsity Boys Volleyball team has been busy over the past few days as they are off and running with an overall record of 3-2.  The Hawks started the season with a dominant 3-0 win over crosstown rival Ceres High this past Friday night.  The Hawks then finished in 5th place over the weekend at the Orestimba Tournament with wins over Delhi (2-0) and Pitman (2-0) and losses to El Capitan (0-2) and Livingston (1-2).  Last night in the CIF Foundation Game (exhibition game), the Hawks avenged their loss to Livingston by defeating them in straight sets, 3-0.  Although the Foundation game doesn’t not count on their overall record, the Hawks played well and proved they are ready to be a factor in the CCC this season.  The Hawks will continue their pre-season schedule when they travel to Ceres High on Friday night to take on the Bulldogs again.

Baseball

Varsity: East Union 6, Central Valley 5

Varsity: Ripon 6, Central Valley 1

JV: East Union 6, Central Valley 0

JV: Central Valley 1, Ripon 0

The Varsity Hawks have shown signs of competitiveness early this season, but have failed to bring home their first win.  In game one, the Hawks led the East Union Lancers most of the way, but eventually fell late by the score of 6-5.  In yesterday’s game vs. Ripon, the score was 2-1 for a majority of the game, but the CV bullpen faltered late and the game ended 6-1 in favor of Ripon High.  The CV starting pitching has been solid so far, highlighted by Nicholas Dominguez (5 IP, 7 K’s, 1 earned run allowed).  Offensively, the Hawks have received production from Fernando Dominguez (3-7, 2 2B’s, 2 RBI) and Chris Garcia (2-2, HR, 2B).  The Hawks will be busy this week with games against Pioneer (Woodland) at CV tomorrow and then a 2-game series vs. Ceres High; at CV on Friday and at Ceres High on Saturday.
